Open workshop — what participants wrote
Tan Wei Ming
George Town, Penang
I've been getting EPF statements for eighteen years. I never understood what most of the sections meant — I just looked at the total. The annotated sample from Pensara changed that. I went home and read my actual statement for the first time, properly.

The question list they gave at the end was the most practical thing. I went to see a licensed financial planner two weeks later, and I asked three questions from that list. It made the appointment much more useful — she said most people don't come in with questions that specific.

I came in sceptical — I thought it was going to be a soft sell for a financial product. It was not. They are very clear about what they are doing and what they are not doing. Just explaining the paperwork. That is exactly what I needed.

The glossary was genuinely useful. There are terms on my statements I've seen for years and never looked up. Having them defined plainly in one place, with a note about what they do and don't tell you, was a relief. Small group size helped — there was room to ask questions without feeling awkward.

Decent content for the fee. The worksheet is the thing I use most — I've filled it in for the last two years' statements now and can actually see changes. I would have preferred slightly more time on the section about voluntary contributions, but the facilitator answered questions on it afterwards.

I attended with my husband. We have both been with different employers over the years, and I realised we had been keeping our statements separately and had never compared notes on how the fields differed. The facilitator's explanation of how different schemes present the same type of information was exactly what we needed.

FAMILY COACHING
Private coaching — household accounts
Chan Lai Foong
George Town — family coaching client
My mother is 71. She has statements going back to 1992 in four different boxes in her bedroom. After five sessions with Pensara, they are in one indexed file. We also built a folder on her tablet with digital copies. She can find anything in under two minutes now. The session on writing letters to institutions was something neither of us had thought about — we had no idea you could write directly to request old statement reissues.

We did the sessions online after the first in-person meeting, which worked well. My father lives with us but gets tired easily, so having the later sessions online meant he could participate without travelling back to George Town. The correspondence log template has been particularly useful — we've had several letters to write since finishing and the template keeps them clear and concise. Worth the fee for that alone.

CASE STUDIES
Three engagements in more detail
CASE STUDY 01 · OPEN WORKSHOP
A school teacher approaching her final years of service
SITUATION
A secondary school teacher in her late fifties with thirty-one years of EPF contributions, holding statements she had never read carefully. She had questions about the difference between Account 1 and Account 2 fields and what the employer contribution section meant relative to her payslip records.
WHAT THE WORKSHOP COVERED
The annotated sample statement clarified the difference between the two account categories and what the employer section records. She used the personal records worksheet to note figures from the last five years' statements she had brought. She left with a clear question list for her school's HR office.
OUTCOME
She followed up with a licensed financial planner six weeks later, using the questions from the workshop. The HR office confirmed a discrepancy in recorded employer contributions for two years, which the school rectified. Pensara did not advise on either matter — the workshop equipped her to identify the right questions.
CASE STUDY 02 · FAMILY COACHING
A household managing documentation for a recently widowed parent
SITUATION
Three siblings jointly managing the estate and documentation of their widowed father. Retirement-related documents were spread across two properties. Employment history from the 1980s was incomplete. Several scheme-related letters had not been acted on.
WHAT THE COACHING COVERED
Five sessions across six weeks covering document location and sorting, an indexed filing structure the siblings agreed on together, scanning and naming conventions for digital copies, and a log of outstanding correspondence items. The final session produced a written summary of questions to bring to an estate lawyer.
OUTCOME
All three siblings can now access and navigate the household file, including the digital backup. The correspondence log identified three unanswered institution letters, all of which were addressed within a month. The siblings met their estate lawyer with an organised file and a clear list of questions — the lawyer noted the session was substantially more productive than usual first appointments.
CASE STUDY 03 · INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAMME
A Penang-based cooperative running member education sessions
SITUATION
A cooperative with 340 members, predominantly aged 45 to 65, wanted to run retirement documentation sessions at their monthly meetings but had no curriculum and was uncertain about what their facilitators were and were not permitted to say.
WHAT THE PROGRAMME COVERED
Pensara delivered the full institutional programme — curriculum, twelve session decks in English and Bahasa Malaysia, three-day facilitator training, governance note, and member records workbook. The cooperative ran the first cohort of 28 members over four months, with Pensara available by email during the run.
OUTCOME
The cooperative has now run three cohorts independently. The closing review after the first cohort identified two session decks that needed minor adjustments for their specific membership profile, which Pensara made at no additional fee. The governance note was reviewed by their legal advisor and placed on file without amendment. The programme is now part of their annual member calendar.
